Digging Dinos!

s-l500.jpg

Introduction

The instructor will ask, "Do you know how scientists knew dinosaurs existed?" The instructor will demonstrate fossils discovered in sand and describe how paleontologists excavate and locate bones using specialized instruments. The instructor then explains that once archeologists unearth dinosaur fossils, they begin to reassemble them to determine the dinosaurs' shapes. In this lesson, students will discover their own fossils and conduct investigation on the type of dinosaur they uncovered.

Task

Students will be given a dinosaur egg, which they will need to excavate in order to determine which dinosaur it contains. After using the tools and thoroughly exposing the dinosaur, the students will be required to create a PowerPoint describing the dinosaur and providing basic information about it, such as where it lived, what it ate, etc.

Process

  1. Teacher will ask the question “ Do you know how scientists know dinosaurs existed?”

  2. The students will then receive an egg dinosaur excavation package, each containing a unique dinosaur.

  3.  After the dinosaur is completely revealed, students will conduct research on their dinosaur.

  4.  Students will then construct a PowerPoint (approximately 7 slides) explaining the basic dinosaur information.

  5. Students will deliver a discourse regarding their excavation process and what they find fascinating about the dinosaur.

Evaluation

  1. Completion of egg excavation. (20 Points)

  2. Research dinosaur (20 Points)

  3. Completion of dinosaur (7 slides) (20 Points)

  4. Presentation (20 Points)

  5. Explanation (20 Points)

Conclusion

Through this activity, students will comprehend the duties of paleontologists. In addition, students will study dinosaurs, fossils, and excavations. Students will develop presentation skills, research abilities, creativity, and oral communication abilities. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to learn about a potential career path (paleontologists).
